Flowers in a Jug captures a lively, varied bouquet arranged in a tall white jug that sits firmly on a blue checked tablecloth. Hockney uses quick digital marks to describe the textures of leaves, stems and blooms, from deep purples to flashes of bright yellow. The brown backdrop isolates the arrangement, allowing the saturated greens and floral colours to take full attention. The composition is energetic rather than polite, as if the flowers were still shifting into place when he drew them.

This work reflects Hockney’s belief that still life should retain the sense of real time. Using the iPad, he can adjust colour and refine shapes instantly, responding to the slightest change in light or angle before it disappears. Once printed at scale, the artwork keeps the spontaneity of the digital drawing while gaining the tactile presence of a physical print. It turns an everyday act of arranging flowers on a table into a study of movement, colour and the pulse of living things.
  • "I believe that the very process of looking can make a thing beautiful."

    - David Hockney

Hockney’s iPad works are driven by speed and curiosity. He uses the device to draw as quickly as he sees, freeing himself from the delays of traditional media. Colour can be pushed brighter, shadows deepened, shapes corrected in seconds. The screen becomes a studio that reacts instantly to the world in front of him. When these digital drawings are printed, they hold on to that urgency, proving that technology can sharpen perception rather than distance us from it.
